Art can be so expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Check out these tips and tricks to grab some free art for spring, or any season really!

Let’s talk free art for spring! It’s a thing, really! There’s something called Wikimedia Commons and it’s a Public Domain for art. It’s an online place where you can search and download all sorts of art for free. You can then get it printed and framed and there you have it. Pretty cool, right?

FAQs

Where can I find these paintings?

Everything is linked above, however, if you’d like to find your own paintings, head to Wikimedia Commons and start your search!

Where should I print these paintings?

You can print wherever you’d like. For me, I used to love Costco until they stopped printing recently. They now have a deal with Shutterfly so check that out if you’re a costco member. Otherwise, Walmart has yet to fail me and I’ve heard great things about Mpix. I always opt for a matte photo paper when that’s an option.

Where should I find frames?

I typically like to buy frames every time I see good ones at the thrift store, since they’re usually just a few bucks. And then I have a stockpile at home for moments like this 😉 If you don’t want to look at the thrift store, Target and Walmart usually have good, affordable options as well.

Should I add a matting?

Yes, yes you should. This is maybe just my opinion, but adding a matting to a photo takes it majorly to the next level.

You can make your matting own out of poster board as I show here, or you can purchase some. Pre-cut matting

How can I make these paintings look more authentic once they’re printed?

I’m so glad you asked 😉 Use this Matte Mod Podge to paint over the picture, copying the natural brushstrokes of the painting to give it some texture and interest like an oil painting.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed this post about free art for spring. I’ll be printing some of these paintings to share with you guys next week. I’ll be sharing the framing/matting process, the mod podge process and the decorating/styling process. Can’t wait!

I found the search was easier when I added “painting” to the end of each search

Since I was looking for a vintage oil painting look, I added the word “painting” to the end of each search, that was I weeded out some of the random photos from 2005 that also exist on the public domain. Hope that’s helpful!
