This black and white farmhouse nursery is simple, yet bold. It is the perfect space to grow up in.
The Original Design Plan
At the beginning of planning this nursery, I was on Pinterest for probably weeks before I had a general direction to go in. I’m still not sure if there’s a theme, but I wanted to keep it somewhat “theme-less”. I didn’t want to be limited of what could be added to the room. I always recommend putting together a dream board, of sorts, before you do/buy anything. That definitely helps avoid the buying/hating problem. Here’s my original inspiration.
Whenever I take on a room in my house, it usually takes a while before it’s finished. Part of that is budget, but part of it is also me being very intentional to make sure I buy the things that I actually want. I tend to be more spontaneous, in general. This becomes a problem for me when it comes to shopping. There have been many times when I buy something on the spot, take it home and hate it forever. I’m working on that.
What Actually Happened…
I started by painting the room. I painted it Sherwin Williams “On the Rocks”. It’s a light gray, very neutral. My whole house is actually that color… for now 😉 It was basically an empty gray room for quite some time.
We took a dresser, that we actually already had, and set it up as the changing table. My goal for this room was for it to be practical, but not cluttered. Therefore, dual purpose items were key.
While we did purchase the crib, bookshelf, crib mattress, rug, wallpaper and rocking chair, most of the details in this room were either found around our house or handmade by yours truly.
Crib and Rug
Our Jenny Lind crib is new, but I’ve been asked so many times if it’s vintage. It’s actually from Amazon. You can find that here. The rug is also from Amazon (Prime members, and proud of it, if you can’t tell). It’s just a simple stripe. It was actually a gift off of our registry. We put a 5×7 on our registry, however, this room is pretty small (10×12 maybe?). I recommend a bigger size for a bigger room. You can find that rug here.
Curtains
There are so many opinions on blackout curtains, let me tell you. I wavered so many times, simply because of all of the mixed reviews. I did end up getting some, mainly so that I had the option to make it completely dark, if I ever needed/wanted to do that. They aren’t my first pick, when it comes to curtains, but again, practicality. You can find them on Amazon here.
Rocking Chair
The rocking chair was something that I had picked out from the beginning. A classic wingback style chair, in a linen-like gray fabric… what’s not to love about that?? I purchased that from Target, you can find it here.
Crib Mattress
I saved this one for last, because my decision to buy this mattress wasn’t design related at all. There’s a theory (not proven) that crib mattresses could potentially be a factor in certain, unexplainable cases of SIDS. The idea is that mattresses are laden with chemicals that could potentially disrupt the way the baby functions while sleeping on it. Even though it isn’t proven, it’s enough to make me think and to realize that I don’t want my baby breathing in harmful chemicals every time he sleeps. We purchased the Naturepedic crib mattress. It’s organic cotton, and one of the few safe crib mattresses on the market. You can find that on Amazon here.
Unfortunately the wallpaper is out of stock, and I don’t think that it will come back. With that said, Target has tons of cute temporary wallpapers.
Anyway, there you have it. Feel free to share using the button at the top of the page 🙂
