An Honest Review of our IKEA Ektorp Sectional

There’s no way that I’m alone in drooling over Pottery Barn couches, right? I mean, they’re all sorts of dreamy… but also pricey, and let’s be real, that’s not happening. Even if I had that much to drop on a couch, I probably wouldn’t. It just isn’t who I am. I’m frugal as all get out (usually). Check out one of our most recent purchases, our IKEA “Pottery Barn-esque” sectional.

In case you didn’t notice above, our Goldendoodle, Jasper, will be featured in this blog post. It’s honestly about time he gets his modeling debut. Enjoy.

One thing I’ve always admired about a couch is the slipcover. I just love the skirt (and the fact that you can take it off and wash it). So when I saw the IKEA Ektorp Sectional, I was SOLD. My husband has always wanted a sectional, so as long as we got that instead of the sofa, he was also SOLD. 😉

We had been eye-ing this couch for a while

If you haven’t checked out a recent post of mine, now is your chance 😉 I recently wrote a post called IKEA Must Haves and if you haven’t read it, you should! It includes a good portion of my favorite things from IKEA. Anyway, this couch is 100% on that list.

Delivery Day

We ordered the couch and the closest delivery date was 2 weeks away… I definitely thought it would feel like an eternity, but it went by decently quick 😉 So the end of April came around and this couch showed up on our doorstep in 4-5 big boxes. Luckily the delivery guys brought them in, because wow. They were large. IKEA offers a delivery service for $99 for these bigger items. We ended up doing that and I’ll tell you what, it was so worth it. Otherwise we would’ve needed to borrow or rent a truck, just hope that it all fit, and then drive an hour home with huge boxes in the truck. No thank you!

Of course I opened it all up right away…

Wasting no time, I ripped it all open and got started putting it together. It literally consumed my entire living room.

Luckily it was one of the easiest things I’ve ever put together. The base of the couch came all together, with hinges to connect the seat from the back of the couch (amazing). If I remember right, all I had to do was add the arms and legs, put the cushion covers on the cushions and the slipcover on the couch. It was a breeze. I’d definitely do it again.

Wash it first

I highly recommend throwing it in the washer first, before you put it all together. That way you have a fresh, clean start. And of course, I always recommend a non-toxic laundry detergent, like this one. It’s important that something so regularly used by your family is also safe for them. Anyway, off of my soap box now, back to the couch 😉

2.5 months later

Since getting the couch, it’s been absolutely great! I’ll be honest in saying that the corner piece is definitely more broken in (guilty…), but It’s 100% because we (I) use that spot the most. I’ve only ever spot cleaned it so far. It would probably be smart to wash the whole slipcover soon, but the procrastinator in me says, “ehhh tomorrow”. So we shall see 😉

This couch is literally the best Gilmore Girls watching, ice cream eating couch ever. If that doesn’t convince you to buy this couch, I don’t know what will 😉

Also, Jasper knows he isn’t allowed on the couch, so he waits until we go to sleep to get up there. And if you think that’s ridiculous, it doesn’t stop there. If he hears us coming, he basically army crawls off the couch, back to his bed. Is that ridiculously funny or what? We think it’s hilarious.

How often do I think I’ll wash it..?

No idea. Probably not all that often, however, I love that I can! We recently got this Bissell SpotClean Carpet Cleaner, so I’m planning on using that for spots more often that taking the entire thing off and washing it. I’m so glad to have something that’s both stylish and kid friendly. I think people just assume that there’s no way those things can co-exist, but I’m so excited to continue to find ways for them to meet in the middle.

So here’s the real question…

Would I recommend this couch to my closet friend? You better believe I would!

This entire sectional was under $1000 and I truly believe that that’s an amazing price. If you’re in the market for a new couch, most def check this guy out! We’re in love over here 😉

If you want to check out the specifics, check it out here.

Thanks for reading, friends! Will you do me a favor and share this post? I always appreciate you!

Hi Annie! I’m so excited for you. We absolutely love ours. Just be sure to clear a large space for assembly, otherwise it’s pretty simple! Good luck!

I have this sectional. What have you done to make the cushions so fluffy? Unless more stuffing is inserted, all Ektorps look flat quickly. What did you use and how?

Hi Loretta! Interesting. I’ve never had problems with it going flat. I do flip the back cushions every so often, so they don’t get too worn in one direction. Hope that helps!

Flipping furniture has always been thrilling for m Flipping furniture has always been thrilling for me. Anybody else?! I love to find something at the thrift store that I know would be an easy profit.

These nightstands were pretty rough, but high quality with dove tailed drawers that still worked well. I used wood filler on the top to smooth out the water damage, sanded it off, and then painted them. I used rub n buff on the existing handles and I’m really happy with how they turned out!

I spent $60 on total supplies for them (including buying them) and sold them for $270. Pretty happy with that profit margin & the transformation too 🙌🏼
I used to flip furniture in high school for fun. I I used to flip furniture in high school for fun. I spent the majority of my time out in the garage refinishing furniture, sanding, painting, building random things.

Three things I’ve always loved…
1. Thrifting - I love the hunt!
2. Transformation - I love seeing a good before and after
3. Profit - I love making money. It’s always felt like a game to me

I hadn’t flipped anything in a while, but recently came across this chair and decided to give it a try. I got it from our local habitat for humanity restore for $3!!!! I staged it, listed it for $50 and it sold in 20 mins. Can you believe it?!

We have a few things that we’re saving for at the moment, and this can be a great method to help contribute.

Some things I specifically keep an eye out for are:
- dressers
- matching nightstands
- gold mirrors (or mirrors that could be painted gold)
- unique chairs like this, but they have to feel substantial where they could live on their own, in my experience

Getting the price right is the most important thing. You have to buy low and sell high or it doesn’t work. Keep an eye out FB Marketplace, neighborhood pages, your local thrift store. You can even reach out to friends and family and ask if they have anything to

***It’s important to
1. Know what sells
2. Know how much things could sell for

This cabinet has been really sad and random for the last… 6 months? 😂 it’s ridiculous really. But I just hadn’t been intentional enough to stop and give it my undivided attention. Of course, now that summer is half over, I decided today was the day to give it some major love and decorate it for summer. Loving the way it turned out. So fresh and clean feeling ✨ thanks to @thenester for her constant inspiration in my life 😂 for real though. Always inspired by her.
